NZSSS 2022 Rogaine

Rogaining in the Wither Hills in cooperation with the Marlborough Orienteering Club is an event open to all conference attendees (fun/active networking opportunity). The rogaine will be open all week to attend at any time of the day.

For Early Career attendees, there will be an exclusive session held on Monday afternoon, before the Conference Welcome Function. Transport to Wither Hills for this session is included with student registration only.

Teams or individuals will use the MapRun app to visit as many checkpoints as they wish in a set time period (1 hour). The MapRun app allows participants to go rogaining using their smartphone for punching, timing and even map viewing.  It means that we don’t need to have physical checkpoints out on the course and that participants can go out there anytime they like.

For more information about what Rogaining is, click here.

Basic Rules

  • You have 1 hour to complete the course.

  • Your start time is activated once you pass into the Start Zone (marked on the map by the triangle).

  • The map is marked with checkpoints. Checkpoints are scored differently depending on level of difficulty in reaching them (10-19 = 10 points, 20-29 = 20 points, … 70-79 = 70 points, etc); therefore teams/individuals choose a strategy (for example, to visit many low score checkpoints) and route selection becomes a vital component.

  • Your challenge is to get the highest score within 1 hour.

  • 20 points are deducted for each minute you are late.

Rogaine Instructions

1. Download and install the MapRun6 App onto your phone (Available on Apple and Android phones).

2. Click “Allow” when it asks to send notifications.

3. Click “Allow while using the App” when it asks to use your location. If you get a screen that says determining location wait a minute or two then try again.

4. Click on “Name” and enter your details. Then click accept.

5. Click “Events near me”.

6. A list of events will be displayed. Click on “MOC Winter Warmer 20220630 E1 Wither Hills PZ PXAS”.

7. Click on “Go to Start”.

8. Once the GPS is live, you need to run or walk through the Starting Point (Triangle marked S1) to trigger the course timer. Your phone will beep and say you have started the course.

9. Travel to the controls marked as pink circles on the map and when you are at or close to the site (< 10 m) the phone will buzz and beep, indicating that the control has been collected. The App continuously tracks your location without displaying it. Collect all or as many controls as you want within 1 hour (your time is displayed at the top above the map). Remember, 20 points are deducted for each minute you are late.

10. When you have finished, you need to pass through the Finish site (area by the car park marked with two circles) to stop the timer. This will end the course and give you your score.
