What is CPD and how do I log it?

You can record your CPD hours through your online diary or members’ portal. If you are not part of a formal CPD scheme, keeping an auditable record of structured learning events can still demonstrate your commitment to ongoing professional development to your employer."

 

What is Soil Lingo? I haven’t heard of this word before.
 

This soil lingo event has evolved from previous events called soil judging competitions, which first started in the United States back in the 1960’s.
 

We have changed the name to reflect that this event is really all about learning to speak the language of the soil (the “lingo”); especially for anyone who is interested in learning more about soil, or who use soil in their day-to-day activities.
 

Through hands on, practical exercises in the field and keynote presentations from experts, valuable skills and knowledge are acquired. And on the third day, there is the opportunity to assess your newly acquired skills and make the call as to the soils and land uses.

 

What is the benefit to me of taking part in Soil Lingo 2026?

This 3-day course is designed to strengthen your skills in soil description and interpretation using current New Zealand best practice. You will work with the newly released 3rd edition of the New Zealand Soil Description Handbook and the 4th edition of the New Zealand Soil Classification., building practical knowledge that is directly relevant to soil and land-use work in Aotearoa New Zealand.

The course focuses on a range of soils and land uses found across the Canterbury Plains and Port Hills around Christchurch.

You will also connect with working professionals and soil scientists in the primary sector. Experienced soil scientists, pedologists and land managers will be your mentors throughout the course.

This 3-day course is an official event of the New Zealand Society of Soil Science. At $780pp for a 3-day event ($700pp with a group discount), it represents a highly cost-effective mode of professional development and learning.
