A Joint NZSSS and SSA Conference

STUDENT SUPPORT

Criteria for NZSSS support of NZ university students to attend the joint Australia-NZ Society of Soil Science conference, Rotorua, 2 – 5 December 2024.

Types of support available

There will two types of conference support available:

  1. Conference student award – to support attendance and presentation of a student’s research. A total of 22 awards are available, to be distributed across the different NZ Universities 

  2. Student volunteer support – if a student wishes to attend the conference, but is not giving a presentation, they can apply for financial support as a student volunteer. 
     

A student can only be awarded one of these forms of financial support.
 

Students should first talk with their supervisor about which type of support they should apply for.
 

Applications for student support should be made using the online form above. Closing date for applications is 15 September 2024.  Notification of your application will be emailed to you by 30 September 2024.

 

Student volunteer support details
If a student wishes to attend the conference, but is not giving a presentation, they can apply for financial support as a student volunteer. 
 

In this case the registration fees for the student will be waived. Financial value of this support is limited to the conference registration fee cost.
 

As part of this financial support a student will be expected to help the conference committee with certain activities at the conference, including:

  • Supporting organisers at the registration desk

  • Loading presentations on computers

  • Managing microphones during question and answer sessions

  • Assisting with set-up tasks before the conference

  • Other duties as needed

Conference assistants will have the opportunity to attend their preferred sessions, and a roster will be established for scheduling purposes.

Conference student award: Requirements for financial support:

Students must be enrolled full time at a NZ university studying a soil science related programme.
 

Students must be a financial member of NZSSS.
 

Students must attend the conference and contribute a poster or oral paper.


Conference student award: Application, decision and award:

The amount of funding allowable for students from each of the 8 New Zealand universities will be set in advance of each conference


Students should apply for financial support by completing a form that is accessible on the NZSSS website: the deadline to apply will be advertised on the website and through university contacts
 

All applications will be considered by NZSSS council and students notified of the decision.


Where financial support is awarded this will be paid by NZSSS directly to the successful students once your paper is accepted into the conference programme.
 

Your enrollment status will be checked to confirm you are a full-time student.
 

Conference student award: Allocation of funds:

A limited number of awards are available for students from each of the New Zealand Universities.
 

If applications exceed the number of awards available for a University, the NZSSS Council will consult with the University staff representative to decide which students from their department will be supported.
 

If insufficient applications are received from a University, their allocation of awards will be redistributed to applicants from other Universities.
 

Support will be $650 for North Island University students, and $950 for students travelling from South Island Universities.
